or, rather, i am the person your doctor warned you about.

guess who's diabetic now!

it's me!

i found out by way of a routine blood test at my new primary care provider's; i woke up at 6 am on wednesday to a phone call telling me my blood sugar was over 500 (544, to be precise; for context, normal is 80-120, anything above 150 is worrisome, and people can go into comas at 600) and i had to go to the emergency room right away. i was like "...really? like, now?" and the doctor was like "LIKE, NOW." so i spent most of the day in the ER getting fluids and insulin via the world's most awkward IV and nonconsensually watching NCIS, and then they decided to admit me.

i stayed in the hospital until friday, missing my flight to visit my family in arizona, and now i have to test my blood sugar four times a day and give myself insulin shots and take more medications. the blood tests hurt way more; the insulin needles are 32g, they don't feel like anything.

i don't think i've really processed it yet. testing my blood sugar feels kind of like a game, and atkins peanut butter cups are tasty, and i haven't been out for really long periods of time yet (i did eat dinner out last night, though, and had to do stabby things to myself in the tiniest most sordid bathroom). i cried before i went to the ER, and i haven't cried since, but i have that weird heavy feeling in my face like i'm going to.

idk, thought i'd share.
